Caving Trip 5/27/17

posted Aug 19, 2018, 1:57 PM by Calendar BSATroop46Va
We departed Emmanuel to meet our caving guide, Earl Suitor, manager of the John Guilday Cave Preserve. We headed to the beautiful mountains outside Franklin, WV. We parked along the road and began to gear up. Around 10:00am we began a steep climb up a hillside to the New Trout Cave, which is owned and maintained by the National Speleological Society. Shortly after 10:30am we entered the cave and spent over 4 hours in the cave crawling on our bellies, crawling on our backs, crawling on our hands and knees, walking hunched over, and sometime even walking upright. We got to see many natural wonders in the cave including ares that were mined for saltpeter during the Civil War.
Everyone worked as a team and we all got in and out in fine fashion. After cleaning up and getting into clean clothes, we headed to a buffet in Harrisonburg, VA for dinner before the trip home.
